High Power Femtosecond Yb Laser Amplifier

1. Project name: Development of High Power Femtosecond Yb Laser Amplifier

2. Project content:  Based on the excellent optical properties of Yb ion, LD-pumping all-solid-state femtosecond Yb laser has been attached extensive importance and researched in recent years. At present, among Yb-doped laser materials, Yb:YAG crystal has excellent thermodynamic and optical properties as one of the most extensive crystal materials in the research and application. However, Yb:YAG crystal’s low absorption of pump light and relatively narrow emission wavelength range make it unable to simultaneously satisfy the output of high-efficiency and high-power ultra-short pulse laser.

In recent years, new high-quality ultrafast laser crystals represented by Yb:CaYAlO4 and Yb:CaGdAlO4 have been regarded as rare laser materials that are expected to achieve important breakthrough in the field of all-solid-state femtosecond, with large emission bandwidth (80nm) and high thermal conductivity (6.5Wm-1K-1, etc.) In the early stage, we developed high-quality Yb:CaYAlO4 crystal, first realizing the mode locking laser output of 17 fs, which is also the shortest Yb3+-doped crystal in the world. However, it is difficult for an oscillator to produce ultrashort pulse output with high average power.

The research and work involved in this program include: Growth and representation of Yb3+-doped crystal materials, work of Yb3+-doped crystal in high-power ultrashort pulse laser amplification mode. Realizing the integrated research of material design, preparation and basic application, solve the key scientific and technical problems of high-quality crystal growth, carrying out research on laser performance, and promoting the application of Yb3+-doped high-power ultrafast laser amplifiers.

3. Cooperative organizations:  Jiangsu Normal University Key Laboratory of Advanced Laser Materials and Devices of Jiangsu Province. The research on laser materials and devices is well-known at home and abroad. The laboratory has complete equipment and strong research foundation in the preparation of functional crystal materials and laser devices, and perfects itself in the key technology for growing crystal materials by pulling method.

Established in 1888, Sofia University in Bulgaria is the earliest and oldest institution of higher education in Bulgaria. Now it has become a comprehensive university including natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, and is one of the most famous universities in Bulgaria. It has long been engaged in the research on laser physics, including nonlinear optics, generation and measurement of picosecond laser pulse, mode locking laser technology, diode pumping solid-state lasers and their applications, etc., solving many scientific and technical problems of all-solid-state laser devices. He has made great contributions to the design of all-solid-state laser devices and laser performance. In this program, he is mainly responsible for the research on Yb3+-doped ultrafast laser amplifier.

4. Key points of cooperation:  Jiangsu Normal University is mainly responsible for the research on design, growth, structure of Yb:CaYAlO4 and Yb:CaGdAlO4 crystal materials and spectral properties, with the purpose of obtaining Yb3+-doped crystal materials with high optical quality.

Sofia University is mainly responsible for the design and construction of high-power femtosecond Yb laser amplifiers and the amplified output of high-power femtosecond lasers, with the purpose of obtaining practical high-power femtosecond laser amplifiers and launching laboratory products to the market.
