The high-tech engineering company uses its proprietary breakthrough magnetic gear technology to develop and manufacture products for a variety of industries from all over the world.

It developed two derivative products based on magnetic gears. i.e.: pseudo direct-drive PDD® and MAGSPLIT®. PDD is a very efficient low-speed high-torque motor/generator, ideal for wind power generation, aerospace drives, fan motors, pump motors and marine propulsion. MAGSPLIT is a very efficient power split special-purpose hybrid power transmission unit, which is currently being evaluated by multiple car manufacturers. The structure of MAGSPLIT is very simple, with only two rotating parts. One of its advantages is filtering torsional vibration.

The company is earnestly seeking partners in China and hopes to:

1. Work with wind turbine OEMs or 1st-tier suppliers of OEMs to develop a multi-megawatt generator with the lowest levelized cost, the smallest size, and the lowest weight compared to other direct-drive generator technologies;

2. Further develop PPD generators for the offshore wind power industry.

 

Technological advantages:

Compared with the existing three-stage, two-stage and direct-drive technologies, PDD generators is the lowest Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE).

By improving the efficiency within the range of operating speed (especially under partial load), it can reduce LCOE by 2% to 3%, it will benefit the low wind speed positions significantly.

The generator uses Magnomatics PDD technology, which integrates permanent magnet motors and magnetic gears in one to improve efficiency and reduce the cost of homogeneous power generation significantly. Moreover, compared with other competing direct-drive technologies, the generator is smaller in size and weight.

Magnomatics is currently manufacturing 500kW generators, and it plans to manufacture 2.5MW, 8MW and 10MW generators to accommodate the requirements of offshore wind farm in the future.

Technological applications:

This technology can be applied in a wide variety of fields, including renewable energy, hybrid vehicles, marine propulsion, aerospace, petroleum and natural gas.

Expectations on large-scale application

This generator is a low-cost, multi-megawatt power generator. Once it is verified in mass applications, it will become a new generator technology in UK and will be widely applied throughout the world. Preliminary estimate shows that the direct drive permanent magnet generator can reduce the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) by more than 1%.
